10 Practical IT Security Wins for a Growing Business

Growing businesses rarely lack technology; they lack time to manage every system consistently. The best early security improvements are therefore controls that remove entire classes of avoidable risk.

1. Protect email with phishing-resistant MFA

Email is a gateway to password resets, invoices and sensitive conversations. Prefer passkeys or hardware-backed authentication over SMS where possible.

2. Separate administrator accounts

Daily browsing and email should not happen from privileged accounts. Separate identities reduce the damage caused by one compromised session.

3. Remove access quickly

Connect onboarding and offboarding to one accountable process. Disable accounts, tokens, shared passwords and device access immediately when roles change.

4. Back up—and restore

Maintain isolated, versioned backups and test restoration. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

5. Patch internet-facing systems first

Use an inventory and prioritise exposed services, identity systems and known exploited vulnerabilities.

6. Encrypt managed devices

Full-disk encryption, screen locks and remote management reduce exposure when equipment is lost.

7. Reduce exposed services

Close unused ports, remove forgotten test environments and require secure remote access for administration.

8. Centralise important logs

Retain authentication, administrative, endpoint and cloud logs long enough to investigate an incident.

9. Practise one incident scenario

Run a short tabletop exercise: who decides, who investigates, who communicates and how does the business continue?

10. Test assumptions

Vulnerability scanning, configuration review and periodic ethical hacking reveal different kinds of weakness. Use each for its proper purpose.

Do not wait for a perfect programme. Assign owners, choose realistic deadlines and verify that controls actually work. Consistent fundamentals outperform an impressive policy that nobody follows.
